Abstract

Silver nanoprisms exhibit fascinating optical properties, but they are thermodynamically unstable due to structural characteristics. Here, the intrinsic instability of Ag nanoprisms was utilized as a basis for developing a new sensing platform. When exposed to sodium bromide, the sharp tips of Ag nanoprisms were selectively damaged and Ag nanoprisms transformed into ellipsoid-shaped nanostructures. Due to these changes in shape, the localized surface plasmon resonance peaks of Ag nanoprism were tuned. Interestingly, the color change rate by NaBr introduction showed a strong correlation with the external temperature, which enabled us to develop a new type of colorimetric temperature indicator.
