Abstract

Brazil has the world’s third largest prison population. Of the roughly 500,000 prisoners currently being held in the Brazilian prison system, 59 per cent are youth between 18 and 29 years of age. The number of adolescents (between 12 and 18 years old) who have been deprived of their liberty in the socio-educational system is around 18,000.
