Abstract

The teenage pregnancy rate in Britain today is one of the highest in Europe (Payne, 1994). In fact the overall conception rate in England and Wales rose in 1990 due to the increase in pregnancy rates among 14- 17 year olds. This article discusses the issues surrounding pregnancy and contraception in adolescent girls, and considers the implications for health care professionals who may have contact with these young women during the course of their work.
