Abstract

The article introduces a new process of extruding twist drills in split dies. In the further part of the paper the findings of the research on extrusion of twist drills in split dies were presented. The main objective of the study was to determine the parameters significantly influencing the value of the helix angle. Based on FEM numerical modeling the data used for teaching the artificial neural networks was obtained. The aforementioned artificial neural networks were used to create mathematical models describing the dependency between the helix angle of flutes and geometrical parameters of the split dies used in the process of hot extrusion of twist drills. The obtained results were then verified in experimental testing. A high compliance between the theoretical and experimental test results confirms the validity of the designed mathematical model, obtained using multiple regression. Moreover, the study presents the usefulness of glass-based lubricants in hot extrusion processes. Analysis of the microstructure of the manufactured twist drills shows a high homogeneity of the grain dimensions after the hot extrusion process.
