Taxonomia da Agricultura Familiar no RJ e RS: Desempenho, Sustentabilidade e Produtividade
This study develops a taxonomy of family farming in Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul, identifying four profiles with regional differences; Rio Grande do Sul outperforms Rio de Janeiro due to better access to rural credit and extension services, highlighting the need for tailored policies to enhance sustainability and productivity.
ABSTRACT Objective: to develop a strategic taxonomy of family farming in Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and Rio Grande do Sul (RS), identifying productive profiles and analyzing their performance in sustainability and productivity, as well as the institutional and socioeconomic factors that explain disparities between states. Theoretical approach: the study integrates strategic taxonomies with the sustainable development agenda (SDGs), conceiving sustainability as a multidimensional outcome. Agricultural extension (ATER) and rural credit are framed as orchestrating mechanisms that reconfigure resources and capabilities; territorial governance and market structure condition outcomes. It assumes contingency via cooperative density, infrastructure, and policy access, proposing that combinations of resources-practices-institutions form distinct strategic gestalts that yield differentiated trajectories of productivity and sustainability. Method: amultivariate quantitative approach using data from the 2017 Agricultural Census (IBGE). An exploratory factor analysis synthesized variables into composite scales (loadings > 0.70), followed by two-stage clustering (hierarchical to define the optimal number; k-means for refinement). Robustness was tested via MANOVA, ANOVA, and Tukey procedures, with analyses conducted separately for each state. Results: four recurrent profiles - Incipient, Sustainable Traditional, Preserver, and Taker - emerged in both states, with regional specificities. Sustainable Traditional showed superior economic performance; Preserver excelled environmentally. RS outperformed RJ, associated with structured rural credit and broad ATER coverage, contrasting with institutional fragilities in RJ. Conclusion: regional heterogeneity demands segmented, territorially tailored policies. Strengthening ATER and structured credit is crucial to reduce productive inequalities, promote inclusion, and sustain economic and environmental outcomes. The study offers evidence-based inputs for differentiated strategies, anchored in a framework that connects typologies, public mechanisms, and sustainability.

This research investigates the complex relationships between digital orientation, entrepreneurial competency, and strategic change, and their impact on sustainable business performance. It also explores how sustainable competitive advantage and flexible resources moderate the link between strategic change and sustainable performance outcomes in dynamic business environments. The authors collected survey data from 349 small and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) to test the proposed model. They then used partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS‐SEM) with SmartPLS 4 software to analyze the relationships between the variables. The findings reveal that digital orientation strongly drives strategic change, which in turn strongly enhances sustainable business performance. Digital orientation also directly leads to sustainable performance. Strategic change mediates the relationship between digital orientation and sustainable performance, while entrepreneurial competency partially mediates the effects of digital orientation. Competitive advantage and flexible resources moderately strengthen the link between strategic change and sustainable performance. This study provides novel insights into the complex interplay between digital orientation, entrepreneurial competency, and strategic change, and how these factors jointly contribute to sustainable business performance. The findings also uncover the moderating roles of competitive advantage and flexible resources, offering practical guidance for managers seeking to enhance long‐term organizational success in dynamic environments.

The purpose of the described research was to identify the impact of different types of environmental innovations on sustainable organizational performance of companies operating in Denmark. The research considered four types of environmental innovations: process, product, organizational and marketing and sustainable performance in three areas: economic, social, and environmental. The research methodology involved a survey of 338 Danish companies, using a validated questionnaire, which provided data on their implementation of different types of environmental innovations and their sustainable performance in three basic areas: economic, environmental, and social. Three regression models were built to verify the theoretical relationship between different types of environmental innovations and sustainable performance. The results showed that all four types of environmental innovations have a positive impact on sustainable performance. Detailed analysis showed that organizational innovations as well as process innovations support organizational performance in all three areas. The article also pointed out the limitations of the research conducted and directions for future research.

This study examines the determinants of green innovation and its impact on sustainable business performance among micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the Bandung Raya region of Indonesia. Specifically, the study analyzes the influence of environmental knowledge and market pressure on green innovation, as well as the effect of green innovation on sustainable performance. A quantitative approach was employed using data from 150 MSMEs, and structural relationships were tested through multiple regression analysis. All measurement instruments demonstrated high reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha 0.89–0.95) and validity (corrected item–total correlation > 0.80). The results reveal that environmental knowledge has the strongest positive and significant effect on green innovation (β = 0.728; p < 0.001), indicating that MSMEs with greater environmental awareness are more likely to adopt eco-friendly innovations. Market pressure also significantly influences green innovation (β = 0.257; p < 0.001), demonstrating the role of consumer expectations, competition, and green product trends in shaping sustainable business practices. Furthermore, green innovation has a very strong and significant impact on sustainable business performance (β = 0.847; p < 0.001), suggesting that eco-friendly practices enhance cost efficiency, customer satisfaction, firm reputation, and environmental outcomes. Overall, the study highlights the importance of combining internal awareness with external pressures to foster green innovation and strengthen sustainability among MSMEs. The findings provide theoretical contributions to green innovation and sustainability frameworks, while offering practical implications for MSMEs, policymakers, and business support institutions.

Business firms face challenges in maintaining their sustainability in the global market. As a result, it is increasingly necessary for them to focus on ensuring sustainable performance by balancing financial, social and environmental outcomes. One of the efforts companies make to achieve sustainable organisational performance and gain a competitive advantage is by increasing their utilisation of knowledge. According to the knowledge-based view, performance differences among organisations result from their different knowledge stocks and their different capabilities for knowledge use and development. Therefore, the ability to acquire and manage knowledge internally becomes essential. It enhances the organisation’s competencies, sustains them, and contributes to achieving a competitive advantage. As a vital resource for organisational success, managing knowledge through practices is necessary. Organisational design refers to how power is distributed in an organisation. Previous research has examined the effects of knowledge management on absorptive capacity and organisational performance. However, few studies have investigated how the relationship between decentralised organisational design and knowledge acquisition capabilities works. To fill this gap, this study aims to investigate the relationship between decentralised organisational design and knowledge acquisition capability in achieving sustainable performance. A sample of 125 responses was collected from companies in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, through an online questionnaire. The data were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling applied to validate the model and test the hypothesis, through the free and open source SEMinR package of the R language. The results indicate that a decentralised organisational design has a positive and significant impact on a company’s knowledge acquisition capability. Therefore, for companies to achieve sustainable organisational performance, they must adopt appropriate organisational design methods that allow for a clear distribution of tasks and responsibilities, as well as promote learning and problem-solving and encourage the creation of a culture of knowledge sharing among employees.

In a dynamic environment marked by significant shifts in production and marketing systems across various industries, companies are compelled to adhere to national and international standards to meet evolving demands from both internal and external stakeholders. These emerging requirements have spurred companies to adopt strategic initiatives, such as emphasizing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), as part of their managerial actions. The primary aim is to integrate two key management science themes: indicators derived from management control systems and the management of sustainable performance. Consequently, our focus lies in the socio-economic approach, particularly the socio-economic cost-value of activities, which influences the diversity of indicators on one hand and the management of sustainable performance on the other hand, mediated through their variety. This underscores the importance of managing sustainable performance by utilizing measures and data tied to socio-economic fundamentals, prompting us to formulate our research question as follows: "To what extent does the cost-value of activities impact the management of sustainable performance?" The empirical investigation transitions from simply describing variables within our sample companies to conducting factor analysis via Principal Component Analysis-PCA. This aims to establish a robust factorial structure and subject several constructs to testing, assessing the internal consistency of the model, the quality and reliability of the sample, and the validity of research hypotheses. Our findings align with prior research, indicating that diverse indicators can inform managers about social and environmental practices, fostering positive effects on sustainable firm performance. However, excessive reliance on these indicators may lead to confusion and dispersion within companies. Hence, it's imperative to tailor indicators to the specific context and objectives of each firm, considering industry-specific nuances. Our study demonstrates that leveraging a diverse range of indicators is pivotal for enhancing sustainable performance dimensions and managing socio-economic factors amidst external pressures. Evaluating the measurement model is crucial for validating the reliability and validity of measurement instruments, as well as assessing the structural model's overall quality, which includes tests like coefficient of determination-R², Goodness of fit-GoF, and others. It's important to note that our measurement model encompasses both reflective and formative constructs. The structural model's quality is gauged by its explanatory power, evaluated through R², indicating explained variance in the variables under scrutiny. To address this issue, we chose to examine the connections between key socio-economic factors and the management of sustainable performance in Moroccan companies certified with CSR labels. Through structural equation modeling, we found that effectively managing the cost-value of activities using diverse indicators plays a significant role in enhancing sustainable performance within CSR-certified companies.

The 2030 United Nations (UN) Agenda for Sustainable Development has posed unprecedented challenges to businesses to integrate Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) concerns into their core operations and strategies and improve their transparency on SDG commitment toward investors and other stakeholders. However, prior studies have questioned the significance of firms' SDG disclosure practices, evidencing their inadequacy. Nevertheless, despite the burgeoning SDG disclosure literature, the extent to which SDG disclosure effectively reflects corporate sustainability performance is still unclear. Accordingly, using data from a large panel data set comprising 635 companies from 45 world countries and 8 industry sectors over the period 2016–2020, this study investigates the relationship between corporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance and sustainable development goals (SDGs) disclosure. Voluntary SDG disclosure has been measured using a disclosure index based on each company's response to the uniform and well‐designed communication on progress (CoP) questionnaire drafted annually by business participants in the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). Several panel Tobit regressions have been estimated to examine whether the level of SDG disclosure retrieved from the CoPs reflects underlying corporate sustainability performance measured by total and individual ESG scores provided by the Refinitiv Eikon database. The study's findings provide robust empirical evidence that sustainability performance positively affects SDG disclosure, especially through environmental and social channels. Therefore, in line with the voluntary disclosure theory's arguments, this study highlights that superior sustainability performers provide more SDG disclosure to prove their high performance and distinguish themselves in the eyes of investors and other stakeholders.

Since China's reform and opening up, the Chinese economy has made significant achievements in society. However, along with this growth, it is also accompanied by the adverse natural environment and the increasing scarcity of land resources and energy. It is precisely these traditional ways of economic and social growth in China, namely the extensive social management model, that have a significant impact on the sustainable development of China's economy and society. Against the historical background of actively promoting scientific development theory and promoting the transformation of the economy and society towards high-quality development in China, the public welfare characteristics of the environment have posed challenges to local government departments in adapting to and dealing with this phenomenon. The phenomenon of resource depletion and environmental pollution often accompanies production behavior and has the characteristic of cross-regional flow. Therefore, addressing these problems requires adopting methods with regional specificity and coordination. In this context, fiscal policy has been introduced into the field of environmental governance and economic regulation, resulting in the "green finance" policy. China's green fiscal policy has undergone long-term development and reform, and has initially established a relatively complete system and regulatory mechanism. Against the backdrop of increasing environmental awareness, China has gradually established a financial incentive policy system guided by environmental protection. The implementation of green fiscal policies in China has achieved significant results and has had a positive and direct impact on sustainable development performance. This article first explains the definition of green fiscal policy, and then delves into its impact on the economy, including its mechanism of action. Subsequently, the article focuses on analyzing the impact of green fiscal policies on corporate performance, revealing potential issues, and proposing relevant suggestions. In order to effectively improve the quality of China's green fiscal policy and play its role in economic regulation, it is necessary to further strengthen the current green fiscal framework, promote the use of funds to encourage technological innovation in enterprises, and have a positive impact on the sustainable development performance of enterprises.

The goal of this paper is to demonstrate how system dynamics modelling can be used in e-government policy and systems as an aid to spport territorial ananlysis, planning and governance, sustainable performance in urban areas and the assessment of policy outcomes. Topics such as renewable energy, efficiency, the design and exploitation of urban energy, water and waste management infrastructure and the alignment of different stakeholders provide relevant fields of study for the analysis of this paper. Grid-scale energy storage systems represent a potential solution for several grid applications such as renewables integration and transmission and distribution upgrade deferral. The integration of these technologies into the grid can lead to different environmental outcomes. System characteristics that influence outcomes include renewable penetration, the existing grid power mix, and electricity demand characteristics. New frameworks are required to provide a robust way to assess the environmental impacts and key trade-offs that emerge when considering energy storage options to inform design and technology selection and improve sustainability performance of the grid. To achieve this, we develop fundamental green design principles specific to grid-connected energy storage, coupled with a systematic and robust sustainability assessment algorithm to inform decision makers, designers and operators. These principles address key issues such as material sustainability, service life, and environmental performance of grid generations’ assets. An algorithm is developed to deploy the design principles of energy storage systems that meet various grid applications. This process takes into account the service that the energy storage would provide. Energy storage applications range from distributed power for built environment to large scale energy storage applications such as renewables integration, ancillary services, time shifting, electric supply capacity, renewable energies capacity firming and micro-grid capability. Each application has specific requirements. For example, ancillary services require bulk capacity in order to keep power system quality, reliability and security (Eyer and Corey 2010). In this algorithm, the potential alternatives (including energy storage) are screened to satisfy performance requirements and sustainability criteria in meeting a specific application. Life cycle assessment (LCA) methods are applied to evaluate environmental sustainability performance. Vanadium redox fellow batteries (VRFBs) utilization in an off-grid configuration is analyzed as a case study to demonstrate the application of selected principles. Maintaining sustainable operations has become a major responsibility of practitioners. Sustainable practices are executed to ensure sustainable performance. Many studies conducted to examine the outcomes of sustainable practices have focused either on the economic outcomes, social outcomes or environmental outcomes of such operations disregarding the Triple Bottom Line Approach to evaluating sustainable performance. Among them the majority have focused on environmental outcomes. Less focus is placed on developing countries or countries in South Asia. Against this background this paper aims to examine the outcomes of sustainable practices towards sustainable performance of manufacturing firms in a developing nation in South Asia. A study was conducted among 154 apparel manufacturing and exporting firms of Sri Lanka in relation to their sustainable practices and sustainable performance as members of supply chains. The sustainable practices were studied in relation to orientation, collaboration, continuity, risk management and pro-activity while sustainable performance was analyzed along economic performance, social performance and environmental performance of these firms. The findings were analyzed using Variance Based Structural Equation Modelling (Partial Least Squares) and it revealed that sustainable practices lead to sustainable performance even in the context of a developing nation in South Asia, highlighting the importance of the execution of sustainable practices irrespective of the level of development of a nation.

This study provides novel empirical evidence on the role of green supply chain management (GSCM) in enhancing the sustainable performance (environmental, social, and economic outcomes) of restaurants in a developing country’s context. Focusing on Tanzania’s restaurant industry, an often overlooked sector in GSCM research, this quantitative study examines both the direct impact of GSCM on sustainable performance of restaurants, and the moderating influence of competitive pressure in such a relationship. Guided by the Natural Resource Based View Theory and Institutional Theory, a conceptual framework was tested using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) and cross-sectional data collected from 386 restaurant managers and supervisors in Arusha between July and December 2024. The results show that GSCM significantly improve environmental, economic, and social performance, with the strongest effect observed on environmental outcomes. Furthermore, the study uniquely reveals that competitive pressure intensifies the positive effect of GSCM on environmental performance, while its moderating role on social and economic outcomes remains insignificant. By targeting the under researched interuction of GSCM, competition, and sustainability within the restaurant industry of a developing economy, this research fills a critical gap in the literature. The results provide practical guidance for policy makers, decision makers, and industrial professionals aiming at promoting sustainability through green supply chain management in the growing restaurant industry of developing countries.

Pediculosis capitis is an ectoparasitosis that is present worldwide, with highest prevalence among schoolchildren. This parasitosis has been correlated with socioeconomic factors and individual aspects of the host, such as sex and hair characteristics. In Brazil, it has been estimated that this disease occurs in about 30% of school-age children. Based on this, the aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of pediculosis among schoolchildren in the city of Niterói, in the State of Rio de Janeiro (RJ), besides analyzing the relationship between positivity and the characteristics of the participating individuals. The study included 244 students from the first to the fifth grades of elementary school who underwent a scalp aspiration procedure in order to diagnose parasitosis cases. Information regarding sex, self-declared skin color, hair length and color, and curl type was collected from each participant. Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher’s exact test and logistic regression. The overall prevalence of pediculosis was 19.7%, and it was more frequent in females, with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001). There were also statistically significant associations between positivity for infestation and the hair length (p < 0.001) and with the hair structure (p = 0.019). Being an afro-descendant, not being female and having dark hair, together, was a protective factor against pediculosis among schoolchildren. This study evidenced that the host’s sex and physical characteristics showed direct relationships with lice infestation, although it was not possible to put forward a robust model for determining the presence of pediculosis. These results point to the notion that this ectoparasitosis is a multifactor disease. KEY WORDS: Pediculus capitis; children; associated factors.

Yield capacity and fruit quality of five processing tomato hybrids (‘AP 529’, ‘AP 533’, ‘Malinta’, ‘Heinz 9992’, and ‘Rio Brazil’), cultivated in protected environment and in open field, for fresh fruit market, were studied. The experiment was conducted from March to August of 2004, on the Teaching, Research and Extension Farm of the University of the State of Sao Paulo (UNESP), Campus of Ilha Solteira, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. It was observed a longer period of plant survival, as well as a greater number of fruits per unit of area, in particular for that classified as medium and small size, in protected environment cultivation. Total yield was not significantly different when both conditions were compared, but the open field cultivation conducted to greater yield of fruits of large size class and fruits with heavier fresh weight. In relation to the hybrids, the yields varied from 80.6 to 0.8 metric ton ha - , the best performances shown by ‘AP 529’ and ‘AP 533’, which reached yields above 97.0 metric ton.ha - . It was also verified that both for environments and hybrids the determined values of pH, quantifiable acidity, total soluble solids (TSS) content and ratio were within standard values for fruits to be consumed in natura . The tomato hybrids AP 533 and AP 529 were more apt for fresh fruit market production cultivated either in open field or in protected environment. The article considers the conditions for the formation of a healthy lifestyle infrastructure in the context of the development of the health care system using the foreign practice of public-private partnership. The article also focuses on the imperfection of the existing health care system and the system of ensuring a healthy lifestyle of the population, on the regional specifics that must be taken into account when implementing the state policy in the field of public health protection in a certain territory. A study of the infrastructure of the health care system and the infrastructure of a healthy lifestyle was conducted. The economic and institutional assessment of the activities of health authorities in the context of the use of public-private partnership mechanisms is given. It is noted that the development of the health care system is impossible without the joint efforts of private organizations, central and territorial state authorities. The author’s definition of the concept of healthy lifestyle infrastructure is given in the article. Improving the infrastructure of a healthy lifestyle, at the same time, is possible only with the use of public-private partnership (PPP), as a key mechanism for interaction between authorities, legal entities and citizens, especially taking into account the regional and municipal specifics of a certain territory.
