Abstract

Under external excitations, a multistory building structure responds in both translation and torsion. The two types of motion are normally coupled, except for the unusual case where the elastic center and the mass center are coincidental in every story of the building, and they lie along a straight line for different stories of the building. The importance of this coupling effect is explored in the present paper using a transfer matrix formulation. An eight-story building with a moderate degree of eccentricity is used as a numerical example.
