Abstract

Abnormal somites from T/ T embryos were grown in an organ culture system to determine if they could form a differentiated tissue, cartilage, which first appears in mouse embryos about 14 days of gestation; T/ T embryos are dead in utero by 10 1 2 to 10 3 4 days of gestation. Cartilage was produced by T/ T somites. T/ T somite mesoderm has an intact and functioning genetic program for expression of cartilage in the simple organ culture system used here.
