Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability. Children with ASD face many challenges in life. In addition, literature shows that about 40% - 60% of these children have an anxiety disorder, which exacerbates the difficulties of these children. An early and accurate diagnosis will help treat anxiety in children with ASD more effectively. There have been a few studies on concurrent mental disorders in children with autism in Vietnam, but they are still preliminary. This study investigates the reality of anxiety disorders presenting in children with ASD according to the SCARED scale. The study results showed that 44,3% of children with autism showed signs of co-morbidities, which was anxiety disorders, reported from parents. The most common types of anxiety are separation anxiety disorder and somatic symptom disorder or panic disorder. The results from this study contribute an essential part to the theoretical and practical basis in the study of accompanying mental disorders in children with autism, and at the same time, open up further and more in -depth research directions in the future.
