Abstract

When driving a car we are making use of it. A set of driving skills is needed if we are to make use of the car. These skills, or sets of routines, are learned over a period of time. They would involve such things as knowing how much to turn the steering wheel when going around a corner, how to synchronise the pedal movements when changing gear, how to move off in a safe manner, how to use the driving mirror in traffic, and so on. There is, however, yet another set of routines which must also be followed if we are to drive our car and make use of it. These other routines involve activities such as filling the tank with petrol, unlocking the door to allow access to the controls, putting the safety belt on and, not least, regular maintenance so that electrical, mechanical and other parts work efficiently.
