Abstract

Synthetic tourmalines have been prepared by hydrothermal reaction of oxide mixes in the temperature range 400–600 °C. Besides the readily synthesized NaMg and NaFe-tourmalines, new phases have been obtained in which the X and Y positions of tourmaline X,Y″ 3Al 6B 3Si 6O 27(OH) 4 are partly occupied by Na, K, Ca and Mg, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn respectively. Partial chemical analysis of some of the products has shown a range of 0.5 to 1.1 atoms of Al in the Y position. An alkali deficient Fe-tourmaline was synthesized containing only 0.12 atoms in the X position.
