Abstract

The compound Mn 1.5Mo 8O 11 is prepared in single phase form by reaction of intimate mixtures of MnMoO 4, MoO 3 and molybdenum powders in the mole ratio 9:10:29 in sealed molybdenum tubing at 1450 °C for 4 days. The thin, hair-like needles crystallize in the monoclinic system, space group P2 1 a , a = 9.8463(8) A ̊ , b = 16.896(1) A ̊ , c = 2.8462(3) A ̊ , β = 94.95(1)°, Z = 2 . The structure, solved and refined to R = 0.038, consists of infinite chains of trans-edge-shared octahedral cluster units coupled together through MoOMo interchain linkages. The unique mode of interchain linking provides channels in which the manganese atoms reside and impose unusual square planar and teeter-toter geometry for the interchain bridging oxygen atoms. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show that manganese is present as high spin Mn 2+ and resistivity data on single crystals parallel to the infinite chain axis demonstrate metallic behavior. The octahedral cluster repeat units in the infinite chains, Mo 4O 5.5 1.5−, each have 14.5 electrons for MoMo bonding and bond order sums indicate that these electrons are utilized efficiently for this purpose.
