Abstract

A series of four new mononuclear mixed ligand copper(II) complexes of the type [Cu(L)(diimine)] (1–4) [where L={1-(2-hydroxy-3,5-diiodobenzylidene)-4-phenylthiosemicarbazide}; diimine=2,2′-bipyridine (1), 1,10-phenanthroline (2), dipyrido[3,2-d:2′,3′-f]quinoxaline (3), dipyrido[3,2-a:2′,3′-c]phenazine (4)] have been prepared and characterized by IR and UV spectroscopy. The crystal structure of complex 2 has been determined. The cytotoxic efficiency of complexes 1–4 has been evaluated by using fluorescence staining studies and complex 4 is more effective, IC50 (μM=21.9), than the other complexes towards MCF-7 (human non-metastatic mammary gland adenocarcinoma) cancer cell lines. 1H NMR (a new signal at δ 15.92ppm) and UV–visible spectrophotometric titrations (new peak at 490nm) revealed that the anion sensor properties of the receptor L shows selective recognition towards F− and CN− anions over other anions. Appreciable color changes are observed when the receptor (L) is treated with the fluoride and cyanide anions, imparting an immediate color change from colorless to deep yellow. The anion sensing of the receptor towards the F− anion is slightly higher than that for the CN− anion.
