Abstract

In this letter, a novel synthetic approach for simultaneous sum and difference patterns based on a single-channel 1-bit time-modulated array (TMA) is proposed. A series of asymmetric 1-bit modulating waveforms suited for monopulse systems is generated by theoretically analyzing the formation circumstances of simultaneous sum and difference patterns. The designed sum and difference patterns have equivalent radiated power as compared to the state-of-the-art approaches, and the TMA has a good power conversion efficiency. Furthermore, because the sum and difference patterns are synthesized at the first positive and negative sidebands, respectively, the signal allowed transmission bandwidth is enhanced when the switching speed is taking into account. Modulation schemes for different scenarios are provided to show the feasibility and effectiveness.
