Abstract

Platinum nanostructures (PtNSs) are versatile in catalysis, biotech, nanomedicine, and pharmacology. Their large surface area and self-humidifying properties benefit energy and the environment. This study investigates PtNSs synthesis and morphological changes on a ∼ 3 nm Pt film under 20 keV Ne+ ion irradiation (5 × 1014 to 5 × 1016 ions/cm2). Higher fluences (1 × 1015 ions/cm2) produce plateau-like structures, while additional irradiation (1 × 1016 ions/cm2) leads to fractal structures with increased roughness. Surface sputtering and agglomeration induced by ion irradiation drive the transformation from Pt nanoparticles to plateau to fractal structures. Understanding these relationships enhances PtNSs synthesis and paves the way for diverse applications.
