Abstract

Abstract The synthesis of alkali ethylenediamineoxodiperoxovanadates (V), A [VO(O2)2en] (A [dbnd] NH4 +, Na+ or K+) has been acheived from the reaction of V2O5 with 30% H2O2 and ethylendiamine (en) at pH 9, adjusted by the addition of aqueous ammonia or alkali hydroxide solution. The corresponding 2,2′-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline complexes require a pH 4–5 for their successful syntheses. The compounds have been characterised from the results of chemical analyses, molar conductance and magnetic susceptibility measurements, and IR and laser Raman spectroscopic studies. Vibrational spectra of the compounds suggest the occurrence of a terminally bonded V[dbnd]O group, a chelated ethylenediamine, and triangularly bonded peroxide ligands in the complex [VO(O2)2en] − ion. tance values, I.r. and laser Raman band positions are summarised in Table I.
