Abstract
Novel azobenzene-containing optically active polyamide-phenyleneethynylenes, poly(2–3ap)–poly(2–3bm) were synthesized by the Sonogashira–Hagihara coupling polymerization of azobenzene-containing bis(iodophenylene) monomer 2 and m-, p-diethynylbenzene derivatives 3ap–3bm. Polymers with number-average molecular weights of 1500–107,800 were obtained in 52%-quantitative yields. The azobenzene moiety of 2 showed reversible light-induced trans–cis isomerization, while the polymers showed irreversible isomerization depending on the composition of mixed solvents.
