Abstract

Reactions of mer,trans-M(CO){sub 3}(PPh{sub 3}){sub 2}CHO (M = Mn, Re) with protonic acids or methylating agents lead to isolation of rare secondary hydroxy- and methoxycarbene complexes in high yields. The compounds have been characterized by IR and {sup 1}H and {sup 13}C NMR spectroscopy; the methoxycarbene mer,trans-Mn-(CO){sub 3}(PPh{sub 3}){sub 2}(CHOCH{sub 3}){sup +}CF{sub 3}SO{sub 3}{sup {minus}} has also been characterized by X-ray crystallography (space group Pbca, a = 18.934 (4) {angstrom}, b = 19.810 (6) {angstrom}, c = 23.436 (5) {angstrom}, Z = 8, d{sub c} = 1.42 g cm{sup {minus}3}, and R = 0.068). Mer,trans-Mn(CO){sub 3}(PPh{sub 3}){sub 2}(CHNHCH{sub 2}Ph){sup +}CF{sub 3}SO{sub 3}{sup {minus}}, has been characterized by X-ray crystallography (space group P2{sub 1}/n, a = 14.268 (2) {angstrom}, b = 16.107 (2) {angstrom}, c = 22.264 (3) {angstrom}, {beta} = 104.62 (2){degree}, Z = 4, d{sub c} = 1.35 g cm{sup {minus}3}, and R = 0.061).
