Abstract
Summary In the present paper I have presented the statistical and syntactic analyses on the frequency and syntactic functions of Latvian declinable (P1) and indeclinable (P2) participles derived from three consecutive studies. Study 1 deals with Latvian fiction of 1960's and 1970's. Its corpus consists of 120,000 words of running text, from which 6524 sentences containing participles were drawn. The number of excerpted participles amounts to 5.4% of the total number of words in the corpus. Study 2 is a comparative study based on Latvian folk tales—Džūkstes Pasakas. Its corpus consists of 20,000 words, from which 1035 participles were obtained, constituting 5.2% of the whole material. In order to compare the material in the three studies the figures in Study 1 had to be reduced to fit those in Study 2 and Study 3.
