Abstract

Abstract Synanthropic indices for several species of blowflies trapped in Calcutta (22°32'N), Malda (24°48'N) and Siliguri (26°44'N) are calculated and compared. Results show that Chrysomyia megaccphaia is the dominant blowfly in dense settlements and exhibits highest degrce of synanthropy in West Bengal. The synanthropic index for C. megaccphaia incrcascs towards southern parts of its range, and that of C. rufifacies increases towards northern parts of its range. C. Aibkeps has a leaning towards synanthropic habit. Luciia cuprtna is a synanthropic fly, and is absent In uninhabited places. Hemipyreilia Ugurriens is asynanthropic in northern parts of West Bengal, but is synanthropic towards the southsrn range of its distribution.
