Abstract

A chronic schizophrenic patient with a high frequency of screaning was transferred to a ward with a token economy program. The screaming frequency remained substantial while she was housed on the ward without being included in that program. After she was introduced into the token economy program, the frequency of her screaming progressively decreased. It returned to its previous high level when she was given tokens as a gift and not required to earn them. As when in the program. Quantitative analysis of her behavior while in the token economy program showed that the more tasks she completed daily the less she screamed.
