Abstract

Bypass grafting is frequently employed to relieve atherosclerotic obstruction of the coronary arteries. Use of the autogenous saphenous vein is associated with a closure rate of approximately 25 percent at the end of one to two years. Internal mammary artery (IMA) bypass grafting is reported to have an occlusion rate of 3 percent at the end of the first year (personal communication from Dr. G. E. Green, New York, 1972). Since longterm patency is a decisive factor in choosing vascular grafts, use of the IMA has become our preferred method for bypassing coronary arterial occlusions particularly those involving the left anterior descending artery.
