Abstract

Environmental sustainability, much discussed today, is often seen as a marketing strategy and not as a goal to be achieved. This study aimed to evaluate the environmental sustainability of dairy farms in the municipality of Paverama, indicating sustainable production practices and areas for improvement in these properties. We visited five farms indicated by the Secretary of Agriculture of the county, from August 19 to September 16, 2013, for evaluation of nine environmental parameters (waste, water fountain, permanent preservation areas, legal reserve, use of pesticides and fertilizers, land slope, erosion, fires and diversity of land uses) and generation of environmental sustainability index. The results showed that dairy farms analyzed do not represent models of environmentally sound properties, being a good regular property, found rates between 0.5 and 0.7. The main problems are the lack of area for appointment as legal reserve inadequacy of the areas of environmental protection and disposal of waste.
