Abstract

This chapter focuses on local environmental initiatives in Scotland. The concept of local sustainability is explored through several case studies of grassroot initiatives based on in-depth interviews with local activists. There has always been a human dimension to environmental issues and problems. Scottish media attention has recently focused on the long-running Renfrew Incinerator Campaign. In July 1990 a public notice in the Scottish press confirmed fears that a toxic waste incinerator was planned for the town. Recognition and sharing of good practice will hopefully facilitate progress in other Scottish communities. Sustainable development must be high on the agenda for the new millennium. The Scottish environment has many distinctive attributes which generate specific Scottish requirements. Sustainable development has many dimensions, cutting across economic, social and cultural spheres, challenging traditional assumptions and the centralised decision-making of experts. There is a general lack of awareness over the actual concept of 'sustainable development' among the lay public.
