Abstract

Squamous carcinomas in WHT/Ht mice were exposed to the biomedical pion beam at the TRIUMF cyclotron. The biological effects of the pion beam were studied using the TD50 assay at the proximal peak and pre- and postpeak plateaus of the pion depth-dose profile. The dose rate of pions was 0.15-0.20 Gy/min. RBE values for pions at the proximal peak were calculated from the ratio of the X-ray and pion D0 values and were found to be 1.3 ± 0.2 for oxic cells and 1.5 ± 0.3 for hypoxic cells. OER values were 2.0 ± 0.4 for pions at the proximal peak and 2.4 ± 0.4 for 250 kVp X rays.
