Abstract We have searched for galactic CO J = 1-0 line emission toward some 100 known and likely extragalactic millimeter-wave continuum sources culled from the BIMA, NRO, and VLA calibrator source lists. The survey comprises essentially all sources suitable at the epoch of observation for CO absorption studies, and probably more than half of all sources north of -30^deg^ declination which will typically have 3 mm fluxes of order 1 Jy in the future. We saw only 11 lines in nine directions, of which eight of the former and six of the latter had not previously been detected. Observations of additional flat-spectrum sources from the compilation of Wall & Peacock revealed weak CO emission only toward the core of Cyg A. The ^13^CO isotope was measured in six of these directions but on average, lines of sight toward extragalactic millimeter-wave sources are remarkably unmolecular: less than one-third of the CO emission expected on the basis of low-latitude galactic surveys was detected. Apparently, the high-latitude (|b| > 10^deg^) molecular gas is not well-described by the single ~70 pc height determined close to the Galactic plane.
