Abstract

Surgical site infections are the most prevalent nosocomial infections in majority of studies conducted in the last decades in the world and in our country. The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence rate of surgical site infections at Surgery Clinic of the Clinical Hospital Center in Kragujevac. The incidence study was performed from August 1 to 31, 2001, followed Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines. In this period 186 patients were admitted and underwent operation at Surgery Clinic of the Clinical Hospital Center in Kragujevac. Incidence rate of surgical site infections was 9.1%. The highest rate was recorded at the Department of vascular surgery (29.2%). The lowest rate was established at the Department of gastrointestinal surgery unit (3.3%). At Departments of neurosurgery, dermatology and maxillofacial surgery surgical site infections were not recorded. The most frequent isolated causative agents were Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas species.
