Abstract

AbstractSEM examination of the lower epidermis of mature leaves of the two species ofAlstoniaR. BR. (Apocynaceae) in Nigeria has provided constant characters potentially useful for their identification. The patterns of epicuticular sculpturing inA. booneiiDE WILD. andA. congensisENGL. differ in the size and density of knots, length of internodes, exposure or concealment of stomata, all knitted intricately to suggest their possible influence on wind speed, water loss and habit selection.
