Abstract
Ultrathin epitaxial films of Ni are deposited on the Cu(100) surface by evaporation in UHV. The dispersion of the Rayleigh phonon in 1 and 2 monolayer films and of a surface resonance in 1 monolayer films is measured by high resolution EELS. Lattice dynamical slab calculations with nearest-neighbour pair potentials fit the experimental data when the Ni-Ni coupling in the layer adjacent to the Cu substrate is softened by 50%.
