Abstract
The Rayleigh phonon dispersion for ultrathin epitaxial Co films on a Cu(001) substrate has been measured by high resolution EELS. The phonon energies are higher than those of Cu and show substantial flattening near the zone boundary, suggestive of the surface stress in the films.
