Abstract

Two methods of surface grinding can be distinguished: (a) grinding with high downfeed rate and low work speed, and (b) grinding with low downfeed rate and high work speed. This paper shows which of the two methods gives the better grinding results in terms of cutting forces, surface roughness and integrity, grinding wheel wear at high wheel speeds and high metal removal rates. The workpiece materials used were low and high alloyed steels, stainless steels and high temperature alloys. The grinding wheels differed in hardness, grain size and bond material.
