Abstract

Azimuthal and polar angular dependent surface extended X-ray absorption fine structure (SEXAFS) studies have been performed on Ag(110)-O(2 × 1) using the synchrotron radiation of the new electron storage ring BESSY. Independent measurements with the electric field vector E parallel to the [100] and [110] directions yield first and second nearest-neighbour distances of 2.06 and 2.17 Å, respectively. They show unambiguously that the adsorbed atomic oxygen is located on the two-fold bridge site in the [100] direction 0.2 Å above the surface Ag atoms. This result is supported by a comparison of SEXAFS amplitudes.
