Abstract

The Inelastic Collision Model (ICM) of Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) is modified to include the effects of a step surface barrier potential for the s-wave approximation. Internally propagating electrons are allowed to partially or totally reflect at the surface and reflected electrons are then self-consistently rescattered in the bulk crystal. Calculations are presented for Cu(100) using the modified ICM which exhibit surface barrier resonances in agreement with those calculated by Jennings based on the formulation of McRae. Intensity versus energy calculations done for A1 (100) illustrate the sensitivity of the LEED intensities to the position of the barrier. Qualitative agreement is found between experimental and calculated rotation diagrams.
