Abstract

The achievement of sustainable competitive advantage is no more a single company’s affair. Several other supply chain members affect the chances of performance improvement. The adoption of supply chain performance measurement systems (SCPMSs) shared by several firms represents an attempt to drive supply chain relationships towards common strategic goals. The present study aim, first, at introducing a comprehensive framework of SCPMS lifecycle (encompassing the phases of design, implementation, use and review), by scouting heterogeneous streams of literature. Second, by means of a supply chain case study involving seven companies across three tiers of the Italian mass retail supply chain, different firms’ perceptions about benefits and criticalities associated to the SCPMS adoption are analyzed. Third, relationships between SCPMS lifecycle characteristics and benefits/criticalities are analyzed. By adopting a theory building approach, results are summarized through a set of six propositions. A dichotomy of opinions related to the SCPMS adoption emerges and let us identify the most relevant factors affecting the SCPMS effectiveness. Finally, since the lack of industry standards emerges as a crucial barrier to SCPMS adoption, we identify relevant factors that might contribute to overcome this issue.
