Abstract

The manifestation of the superelasticity phenomenon in the deformation of powdered titanium nickelide has the following characteristic features, linked with the nonuniformity of deformation or porous solids: The degree of shape recovery does not reach 100%; the elastic aftereffect exhibited by powdered TiNi exceeds substantially the reverse strain of solid titanium nickelide; and the maximum point on the reverse vs direct strain curve is displaced toward larger values of direct strain. In the cyclic loading of powdered titanium nickelide, too, certain characteristic features have been discovered, viz., the degree of recovery is much lower in the first loading than in the remaining cycles; repeated application of one and the same load produces further densification of material, which, however, decreases with increasing number of cycles; and after 5–10 loading cycles the reversibility of strain is almost 100%.
