Abstract

Excess sun exposure can lead to deleterious sequelae, such as skin cancer, photoaging, immune suppression, and exacerbation of phototoxicities (Matusumura & Ananthaswamy, 2004; Moyal & Fourtanier, 2008; Wang et al., 2005). Sun protection is critical for the pediatric age group, because studies have shown that the amount of sun exposure during this period is related to subsequent risk of melanoma and other skin cancers (Kennedy, Bajdik, Willemze, De Gruijl, & Bouwes Bavinck, 2003). This finding is significant because the number of children who experience sunburns is staggering.
