Abstract

Although a decrease in body mass index (BMI) over time is associated with higher mortality in hemodialysis patients, BMI is unable to distinguish between lean body mass and fat mass. Therefore, the relationship between the BMI trajectory and mortality remains unclear. On the other hand, the modified creatinine index (CI) was developed to easily estimate lean body mass. Adding a parameter such as CI trajectory as a surrogate marker of lean body mass to the BMI trajectory may improve accuracy of nutritional evaluation and clarify the relationship between BMI trajectory and mortality.
