Abstract

The author had the privilege of helping the late Mr H. J. Grayson first in the design and construction of his micro-ruling machine* and subsequently in the design and construction of his machine for ruling diffraction gratings. During these periods and later, while studying the operation of these machines, several improvements suggested themselves to him. Four of these improvements are described; of them, the thrust bearing has probably the widest application, while the slave screw and the suspended plate carriage are mainly of value in machines for ruling large and heavy gratings.
