Abstract

Do the speeches of American presidents warrant a stylistic analysis? This article seeks to explain how a heavily ritualized, thoroughly institutional kind of discourse cannot only be analysed using the tools of sociology and political science. A stylistic perspective on these speeches can help understand the evolution of the presidency, presidential communication and contemporary politics.
