Abstract

Meningitis is serious clinical condition of the central nervous system (CNS) associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality, particularly in children, the elderly, and immunocompromised patients. The aim of the study to determine the relationships between the microbial infection and some immunological parameters of meningitis infection. The present study was conducted in Babylon province in the period from August 2019 to February 2020. The CSF specimens 94 were collected with age range 14 day to 6 years from Babylon Hospital for women and children and Al-Zahra Hospital in AL-Najaf. The specimens were generally collected from patients clinically diagnosed by specialist physician from each suspected child with meningitis from lumber puncture by pricking the lumber puncture in an amount of cerebrospinal fluid. The results of the immunological examination of some immunological parameters done using Semi Auto-analyzer mindray system for CRP and the ELISA for measurement IL-1β and IL-10 concentration, has been shown a significant increase in patients serum CRP (12.15±5.32 mg/l) when compared with control (4.26±0.43 mg/l). IL-1β is a cytokine that has pro-inflammatory properties. The mean of IL -1β CSF concentration in patients (1.51± 0.26 pg /ml) was significant increase p<0.05 compared with the control (1.34±0.22 pg /ml), while show the mean IL -1β. serum concentration in patients (1.60±0.57 pg/ml) was no significant difference compared with the control group (1.53±0.52 pg /ml). IL-10 is a cytokine that has anti-inflammatory properties. The mean of IL-10 CSF concentration in patients (17.73± 0.29 pg/ml) was significant increased P<0.05 compared with the control group (17.90± 0.20 pg/ml), while show the mean IL-10 serum concentration in patients (17.89± 0.82 pg/ml) was no significant increase compared with the control group (17.72±0.55 pg/ml). Keywords (Meningitis, CRP, IL-1β and IL-10).
