Study on the Nature of Goryeo-sokyo in Terms of Akjang

Abstract

본 연구는 ‘淫辭’ 내지 ‘男女相悅之詞’로 성격이 고정되어 있는 <쌍화점>에 대해 역사적 측면, 악장적 성격에서 접근하여 분석한 것이다. 이러한 평가는 조선시대 유학자들의 잣대로 평가절하된 것이며 이와 같은 견지는 현재까지도 유효하게 적용된다. 이는 <쌍화점> 뿐만 아니라 대부분의 고려속요에 대해 공통적으로 적용되는 문제이기도 하다. 그러나 문학 작품의 의미를 편향된 시각으로만 한정지을 것이 아니라 ‘음사’ 이외에도 다른 해석의 가능성을 열어두고 다양한 각도에서 해석을 시도하는 것이 문학연구자의 소임이라고 생각한다. 그리하여 본고에서는 <쌍화점>을 단순히 퇴폐적이고 향락적인 노래에 머무르지 않고 궁중 음악으로 사용되었다는 단서를 바탕으로 이 노래가 지닌 악장적 성격을 고찰하였다. 악장은 원래 왕실에서 나라의 공식적인 행사에 쓰이는 노래 가사를 두고 부르는 일반적인 명칭이다. 왕실의 국가적 행사로서는 대표적 의례에 해당하는 祭禮樂(제향)과 會禮樂(연향)에서 王業을 찬양하고 송축할 목적으로 만든 노래 가사를 주로 ‘악장’이라 하였다. ‘악장’이라는 말은 고려 중기부터 조선의 모든 시기에 걸쳐 왕실의 국가적 행사에 쓸 목적으로 만든 송축적인 노래 가사이면 어느 시기의 노래이건 두루 사용되었다. 따라서 <쌍화점>이 악장적 성격으로 송축이나 왕업을 찬양하기 위한 노래라는 논리를 뒷받침하기 위해서 <쌍화점>이 유행했던 충렬왕대의 사회&#8228;정치사와 밀접한 관련이 있다는 전제하에 역사적인 측면에서 논의를 진행하였다. <쌍화점>의 제작 연대는 충렬왕 25년(1299) 5월로 알려져 있다. 이 해는 충렬왕 복위 이듬해로 이것은 충렬왕 복위(1298.8) 전후의 정치사가 <쌍화점> 이해의 중요한 단서가 된다는 뜻이다. 주지하다시피 문학작품의 의미는 작품이 창작되었던 당시의 시대적 배경과 맞물려 해석해야만 올바르게 해석될 수 있다. 따라서 <쌍화점>의 가사에서 겉으로 보이는 외설적인 내용에는 당시 고려가 처한 원나라와의 관계 속에서 주체적인 노력을 위한 충렬왕의 노력이나 왕업을 찬양하기 위한 일종의 코드가 숨겨진 노래로 파악하였다.This study analyzed <Akjang> which is biased as indecent language or sexual love story between man and woman from historical and musical point of view. Such evaluation on the piece is a depreciation from scholars of Joseon dynasty which is valid up to this date. This is not just for <Akjang> but also a common problem of most of Goryeo-sokyo. However, I believe it is a responsibility of a literary researcher to try to interpret literary works from various point of view with possibility of different interpretation other than indecent language rather than limiting the interpretation to a biased viewpoint. Thus, this paper contemplated on the song s musical characteristics based on the fact that <Akjang> is not just a simple decadent and enjoyment music, but a song that was once a court music. To back this view, the study discussed historical background of the time when <Akjang> was popular, which is closely related to the history of society and politics of King Chungryeol. Thus, this study suggested a fresh interpretation on <Akjang> by combining it with the political history of the late Goryeo by breaking away from general view that this song is decadent and obscene.
