Abstract

This paper deals with the comparative study of positive electrode material in li-ion battery using COMSOL Multiphysics 5.5 software. Intense research is going on to develop batteries with higher voltage capacity and energy density due to the growing demand for more sustainable energy sources and portability in daily life. Li-ion batteries belong to advanced battery technology, which convert electrical energy into chemical energy through redox reactions at the electrodes. They have the advantages such as higher energy density, one regular charge is needed, relatively slow discharge, low maintenance, reasonably good load characteristics, and availability of many types. As a result, these batteries are used in portable devices, electric vehicles, power tools, telecommunication and aerospace applications. In this work authors have compared the commercially available positive electrode materials such as NMC, NCA and LCO with graphite electrode and LiPF <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">6</inf> liquid electrolyte using lithium-ion battery designer of COMSOL. This model produces graphs of SOC-OCV relationship in cathode materials, electric potential vs. capacity, cell potential, voltage, discharge rate and li ion potential over time. Among the generated graphs, LCO battery pack showed the better cell potential. Hence they are considered to be suitable for application in energy storage of energy harvesting. LCO battery pack find its application mostly in small portable electronic devices.
