Abstract

The influence of Mg 2+ ions on the equilibrium isotope exchange between calcite single crystals and saturated CaCO 3 solution, labelled with 45Ca, was studied. It was found that when the solution has (Mg/Ca) molar ratios of 10–15, a stable composition of (Mg/Ca) ≈ 1 on the surface is reached. Such a stable surface composition is of interest with respect to the formation of a dolomite nucleation matrix.
