Abstract

A cylindrical wall-less proportional counter has been constructed for microdosimetric measurements. The sensitive volume was determined using collimated alpha particles and electrically conducting paper technique. Linearity of amplification along the anode wire has been checked and the maximum variation is ±1.2%. Energy calibration has been carried out using alpha particles and 55Fe X-ray source. The resolution and gas gain, at different counter pressures and anode voltages, have been studied. The agreement with theory in the case of counter resolution is adequate; the gas gain measurements have been normalized to Campion expression. It has also been found that the counter functioned satisfactorily down to pressure about 5 torr.
