Abstract

Quantitative image analysis is used to study the structure of microporous tubular hydrophobic PTFE membranes obtained by stretching. Structural differences are quantified by means of the surface porosity, the pore zone size and the pore zone number measured on scanning electron photomicrographs. These parameters depend upon the size of the membrane, its volumetric porosity and the equivalent pore diameter. Furthermore, the homogeneity of the membrane can be assessed by considering inner face, outer face and cross-sectional views of the membrane.
