Abstract
Changes in the body weight and composition of Tellina tenuis exposed to enriched sea water contained in large experimental tanks were followed in two experiments in 1965 and 1966. In both years, following enrichment, there was a rapid increase in body weight, which did not occur in animals in non-enriched tanks. The increase was reflected in changes in carbohydrate, lipid and protein, and increased storage of reserves in response to increased phytoplankton abundance. Changes in body weight of animals of the 5 + year group for the period of the 1966 experiment have been calculated and estimates made of the contribution to total production represented by growth, gonadal development, and storage of reserves.
