Abstract

In Parts I and II of this series (Tallis 1964a, b), pollen diagrams from several upland blanket peat sites in the southern Pennines were compared, and horizons that were apparently synchronous between the various diagrams recognized. Tentative datings were assigned to these horizons on the basis of woodland clearance effects with which they were associated. Accompanying stratigraphic studies suggested that the macro-remains in these upland blanket peats might afford very sensitive indications of past climatic changes (Tallis 1964c). The present paper examines these previous findings in the light of a new detailed pollen diagram which has been radiocarbon-dated for certain critical horizons.
