Abstract

The female gonial cells arise from the peritoneum and male gonial cells originate from the inner peritoneal layer of the nematoform, parasitic male. Gametes (ova and sperms) proliferate from these areas either in clusters or singly and continue to differentiate while floating freely in the coelomic fluid among the coelomocytes. Fully grown oocytes are picked up by the gonostomal lips from the coelomic fluid and accumulate in the egg-sac of the female gonoduct. Spermatogenesis and oogenesis are briefly described. Developing oocytes are capped by thimble-like or ovoid aggregations of nurse cells which disappear as eggs mature. The sexually differentiated eggs show Wolanski sex reaction. The sex determination is, however, cytologically progamic and genotypical. Fertilization in Achaetobonellia maculata seems to be internal and conceivably, takes place inside the egg-sac as embryos of different stages of growth have been found inside the egg-sac of the gonoduct of the female.
