Abstract A discriminant designed to be suitable for assessing resonant stability for certain three-body configurations is described. Some aspects of the method of ideal resonance are also reviewed, emphasizing those terms in the perturbation which affect the resonance. The utility of the discriminant is illustrated by applying it to a sample of 71 asteroid orbits.
