Abstract

1. The gallstones which are classified as bilirubin calculi include such black calculi which are easily decolored with hydrogen peroxide. 2. The black pigment of the “ black calculi ” is a melanin-like substance. 3. The gallbladders in which the “ black calculi ” exist contain a number of cells which have dopa-oxidase, a melanogenic enzyme. 4. The dopa-oxidase containing cells originate in the mast cells. 5. The “ black biliary calculi ” are similar in the site of formation, sex ratio of patient, and incidence of complication by strawberry gallbladder to cholesterol calculi. 6. It may be surmised that the “ black biliary calculi ”. strawberry gallbladder and cholesterol calculi are closely related in etiology with one another.
