Abstract

The essay reconstructs the debate on the study of masculinity, with special reference to the United States. Masculinity studies are related to the evolution of feminism, with special emphasis to the unsolved tensions, generated by the influence of deconstruction, between subjects understood in essentialistic terms and subjects understood as intersections of multiples axes of difference. The essay goes on to discuss the reasons for opening literary studies to the analysis of masculinity, especially in the Italian context, still reluctant to critically interrogate gender identities.
